Problems and stress will always be a part of every human being, of every city and, of every country. In other words, problems are inevitable and they will often serve as the driving force of life. Each problem may be connected to other problems and so on and so forth. But there will always be a plan and a solution for these problems.
Barangay Balmaban of Mahayag, Zamboanga del Sur faces several problems which include the lack of toilet facilities as well as the unsanitary condition of toilets. Excreta disposal is an important part of environmental sanitation. In large areas of the Philippines, especially in far-flung areas of the country, proper excreta disposal is among the most pressing public health problems.
There are several disadvantages of improper excreta disposal and improper toilet sanination. Unsanitary disposal of infected human feces leads to contamination of the ground and sources of water supplies. It attracts domestic animals and rodents and other vermin, which spread the feces. Most often, these instances create intolerable nuisances. And as a major disadvantage, it can facilitate the spread of certain gastrointestinal diseases like parasitism and infectious diarrhea,
In Barangay Balamban, 12%(30) of the total households have no toilet facility. The community’s poor excreta disposal is associated with the lack of adequate water supply, inadequate knowledge and low economic status of most of the people in the said barangay.
The group aims to solve the problem with the community people as the main instrument and foundation. “Kasilyas Mo May Ara Ba?” program is created to solve this pressing problem in the community. The program involves the three strands of knowledge, skills and attitude. The group believes that focusing and emphasizing on these three strands will enable the people to become empowered and thus strengthen their abilities. More so, encouraging behavioral change will further strengthen the solution towards solving this problem.
Right from the beginning, the group targets the community people as the key for the success and sustainability of the project. The group believes that the project will be sustained since the community people will be its foundation.
