Community life, for us, has always been a challenge. Challenge in a sense that all these experiences brought us to a reality that seemed so inconvenient before. Not to mention, the group has also been through several transfer of places due to circumstances which unfortunately took place. We repeatedly took time doing surveys, small talks with people, and convincing them to realize and accept change. But if we linger on these thoughts negatively, then we would not be able to fulfill our purpose. We would not be able to move with purpose.
Being in the community for quite some time, we have seen how diverse people and places are, and this was also a challenge. We know that people in a community share common characteristics in terms of their way of life. They live and breathe in both commonalities and differences that they have been sharing for years. They work their hearts out just to provide the needs of their family, just like how families should be. These people, despite being financially incapable most of the time, still persist. They continue to walk through life no matter how diverse and very tough it could get. That is where we get involve ourselves with. We make them grasp the idea that with their ability to move through diversity, they can be the catalysts of change in their community. It is not mainly our job to do things for them; we make them do the things for themselves. We help them throughout the entire process. We are their partners for change.
It is entirely fulfilling to spend time in the community and see how people move through diversity. And surprisingly, they also taught us how to move through life. They made us see that no matter how different our lives are, we can all share our strengths and capabilities to build a better community. We can all change one another and do something better. Jimmy Carter once said, “We become not a melting pot but a beautiful mosaic; different people, different beliefs, different yearnings, different hopes, different dreams.”
